Chris Lang: 20,000 Followers on Google+ In 6 Months [Interview]

Google Plus has been steadily gaining in numbers with the last stats revealing over 90 million users (January 2012). Even though those numbers pale in comparison to the social behemoth that is Facebook, that has resulted in significantly less noise than competing networks and those early birds who joined the race certainly got the worm. Chris Lang has come from what seems like relative obscurity to being a dominant figure on Google+ with over 20,000 followers in 6 months. With little presence on other social networks, I became fascinated at his massive progress with no dependence on other social followings. Despite a quiet presence on other networks, Lang has been very active with Google for a few years with early exposure breaking the news of Google becoming a social network on his blog in 2008. His blog evolved into something called “Google Friend Connect”, a way to understand what people wanted from social via Google. On the opening day of Google+, Chris Lang had already attracted 2000 followers and has gone on to gain 20,000 in the 6 months since the social network’s debut. This has helped him gain the attention of publishing company Sybex who released the hugely successful [...]

The Accountants Guide to Social Media Marketing

Are you an accountant thinking of using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media tools to promote your accounting firm? You may already have a website and personal accounts with the various social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, but have you created a strategy that ties them all together to further promote your accounting business? This article will show you some of the many ways you can use social media marketing for accountants to effectively grow your practice. Initial Skepticism of Social Media Marketing for Accountants Until late last year, accountants seemed to be wary of using social media for their accounting firms, preferring to use social networks only for professional networking and not for business communications. This fear was due to company concerns about keeping a trustworthy image and dealing with sensitive information. Despite initial skepticism regarding social media, many top accountants are now implementing strategies that include LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook with great success. A recent article in FinancialDirector (UK) highlighted: “Businesses that maintain a block on employees accessing social media may be making a mistake. Of the three most recent uses of social media we asked them to share, 17 percent of Financial Directors said they [...]

Social BOOM! Jeffrey Gitomer Gives The Goods On Social Media

I’ve always been an avid reader but I have to admit that I was never drawn to fiction or novels, almost exclusively reading educational books my entire life. The only books I recall reading that are story-based were Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Life’s Golden Ticket by Brendon Burchard…both motivational parables with very strong, prominent real life themes that resonate with our own experiences. I have spent countless dollars on educational books to help strengthen my entrepreneurial tools and skill set, many of which found a place collecting dust on my bookshelf. Despite this fact, one of the authors that have managed to consistently prevail as a dominant influencer in my business strategies as well as millions of sales professionals and entrepreneurs across the world is Jeffrey Gitomer. His sales strategies have been appreciated and sought after as a corporate sales trainer by some of the world’s most successful companies including BMW, AT&T, Time Warner, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM and Coca-Cola. All of his books have been number one best sellers on Amazon.com including The Sales Bible, Little Red Book of Selling, and most recently, Social BOOM! Gitomer has managed to turn his offline audience into a thriving social media community that [...]

How to Promote Your Business With a Google Places Listing

Have you ever typed keywords into Google search before and got a results page with a map on the right side and the first seven websites on the list marked with red balloons from A-G?  If you have, then you have found the “Golden Seven”—the seven top businesses Google have in their Google Places listing. Google Places is the Yellow Pages of Google, because more and more people are using Google to search for products and services located near where they are. Depending on your keywords (and the size of your screen), those seven tend to occupy more than the upper half of your screen. Every business wants to be one of the Golden Seven. Depending on the number of competitors in your area, having your business listed—and entered well—in Google Places can get you in, or close to, the Golden Seven. Notice Google already knows your location (reported by your browser) when you type your keywords, so it will present you with businesses close to your area. Here’s a sample search for “pizza delivery okanagan”: Notice there’s no “Golden Seven” and the only result with the red balloon (also seen on the map to the right) is actually fourth [...]

The Hidden Power of Twitter #Hashtags

Have you wondered why people put # in front of words within their tweets? These are called Twitter hashtags. What are Twitter hashtags? They started as a means to organize tweets and events. Now Twitter #Hashtags are used to easily find things that may be of interest to you, similar to keyword searches. Making sense with Twitter #Hashtags The hash, pound, or number, “#”, sign was originally used in Twitter to categorize posts—this preceded any word or series of words not separated by a space. For example, if I tweet “I’m writing an article about social media and I want to make that a hashtag, I simply place a # in front and remove the space between social and media i.e. #SocialMedia and it becomes a clickable and searchable Twitter hashtag. I can then do a Twitter search and see who else is using this hashtag. This is great for tracking a trending topic in real time. Twitter #hashtags are more like personal labels (making no sense to the average person) than keywords because many are unique and some don’t last long. The hashtag was actually invented by Twitter users to make sense of trends since tweets are not like [...]

The How and Why of Twitter Engagement
